# In African skin the melanosomes are larger; they are heavily pigmented and scattered singly throughout the keratinocytes.

# In white Caucasian skin the melanosomes are smaller and have less melanin; they are distributed as clumps in keratinocytes.

Scientists do not fully understand why the different types of hair grow straight or curly or wavy. This is probably determined by several factors, which may vary in their importance during life. This is why some curly-headed children have straight hair later in life, and vice versa. These factors include:

* the way the large bundles of keratin are arranged within each hair shaft

* the position of the hair bulb in the hair follicle - in African hair the bulb may lie to the side of the follicle, and so the hair shaft grows out of the follicle at an acute angle

* irregular growth in the hair bulb - if it varies slightly to one side or the other the hair may grow wavy

* the shape of the hair follicle, whether it is straight or curved

* the number of twists per unit length.

Some African hair has 12 times as many twists per centimetre as Caucasian hair.

The keratin bundles in the hair of Caucasoid people are a mixture: most are straight, some are wavy. The proportions of the two types vary a lot. The hair shaft is usually oval in shape.

The tightly curled hair of African people twists much more frequently than in the other groups. The hair shafts are markedly oval in shape, with definite edges. The cuticle is sharply kinked at the edges, and is especially easily damaged at these points. This curious shape is the reason for the vulnerability of African hair to all forms of physical and chemical trauma, and its consequent need for extreme care in handling and very thorough conditioning.

Most people think that Black hair is somehow different from Caucasian, Asian, Indian, Latino, and other types of hair. At first glance, it looks different. Black hair in its natural state looks wooly, while the hair of most other races appears smooth and sleek. In reality though, all hair, whether it is Black hair, Caucasian hair, Asian hair, etc. is chemically the same. All hair is composed of keratin. Keratin is a protein that makes up our hair, our nails, and 14% of our skin. What makes Black hair different from other types of hair is the hair follicle itself. The majority of Caucasians, Asians, Indians, and Latinos have hair follicles that are either straight or wavy. The majority of Blacks have hair follicles that are curved. When a hair follicle is straight, the hair that grows out of it is straight. When a hair follicle is wavy, the hair that grows out of it is wavy. When a hair follicle is curved, the hair that grows out of it is curly. That is why Black hair is extremely curly.

All hair grows. The average rate of hair growth is 1/2 inch a month. All hair has a growth cycle. The difference between short hair and long hair is that short hair has been cut off during its growth cycle while long hair has been allowed to reach its full growth cycle. The best way to make your hair grow faster is to stop it from breaking off. To do this you need to use moisturizing hair care products, and be gentle with you hair. Avoid tight styles and harsh chemicals which damage black hair.
