Can white vinegar soften my hair?

I got a problem with my hair, they are really thick, heavy and rigid. You can say I look like a hedgehog when my hair are really short. So I have heard someone said applying white vinegar on your hair can damage them a bit and make them look softer, can anyone verify that?
