Hair doesn't turn white overnight, however it can appear to happen. If you have a mixed head of hair, some grey/white and some pigmented, a sudden shock can caues the rapid loss of the pigmented hair leaving only the grey/white hair. This would give the appearance that your hair had turned white overnight, but what would have happend is you lost all your pigmented hair leaving only the grey/white hair.

How can your hair change color? Its already outside of your body, there is no circulatory system or anything else supplying or fortifying your hairi - Its just a bunch of organic material with pigment in it! How could being scared affect that???? You might was well try to say that your CLOTHES changed color because you were scared.

Now I suppose it is possible that NEW hair could change color, so maybe roots could turn gray/white, but is their real evidence this has ever happened?

No...urban legend. Your hair cells that you see are dead therefore unable to change color without dye.

No it can't although extreme shock causes a chemical reaction in us and this can change your body. This change can be the cause of peoples hair going white, but it takes round 3 months for the white hair to come through.

NO! Grey Hair is actually transparant hair. The difference between it and your normal hair is you have stopped producing the pigment which gives you the colour you once had. This happens gradually and even if it did happen all in one go you would have to grow out the colour or shave it off and wait at least two weeks to see a difference. it did to my grandad.. his mother died suddening and his daughter (my mother) found her and had to break the news to him.. he didn't sleep that night and when my mother got up in the morning she didn't reconise her dad because his hair was completely white..
